National Alliance to End Homelessness: Library: Youth Aged Out of Foster Care by State - State of Homelessness 2011: "INTERACTIVE TOOL | 10 JAN 2011
FILES: CHAPTER THREE ON DEMOGRAPHICS| PDF | 8 PAGES
The Alliance report, State of Homelessness in America, documents the 2009 levels and 2008 to 2009 changes in homelessness and related economic and demographic indicators. Young adults who age out of foster care are at an elevated risk of homelessness. This report measures the changes in the number of young adults emancipated from state custody each year. The national number of people who aged out of foster care decreased slightly from 29,577 in 2008 to 29,449 in 2009, a decrease of 128 people. The interactive map on the left shows the number of youth aged out of foster care in 2009, and the map on the right shows the change in this population from 2008 to 2009 in each state. [The District of Columbia (167 people and a 2 percent increase from 2008 to 2009) is included in the national number, but not shown in the maps below.]"
