  1. In 1975, physicians were giving out prescriptions for Ritalin. Ed Ritvo of The Behavioral Sciences Clinic of UCLA. He was the chief advisor to the Movie Rainman and a very dear friend. I met him at home when a study was being made of genetic causes of Autism. My youngest son was 4. Many things have happened since then. My oldest son was the first child in Washington State to be mainstreamed. That was no picnic for the teachers or for me. Now, he is grown up and on his own. For a child with an i.q. close to retarded, he has done quite well. Social Services has been a pain in the ass for me, but services in Washington State have helped him live on his own. Fifteen years ago, a doctor gave a friend of mine a prescription for Ritalin to help her severely hyper and very controlling, behaviorally acting out. I came to see her and found her daughter almost lethargic and she had been taking the medication before she went to class in the morning. I took the medication and threw it out. It so disturbed me that I contacted a family help group to give her some help with the doctor and the school district. I was, quite frankly, afraid the girl would die. She had diabetes and problems from being rather severely overweight. This was not helping her. When it wore out she was acting out worse than before. Now, it is my understanding that parents are being required to put their children on behavior modifying drugs before allowing them in school. Since when did the school districts have the rights to arbitrate whether you give your children medication or innoculations which are not in the best interest of the child. It is happening again. When will they ever learn. Children are still being removed from homes when they are autistic because the parents ask for and should get a little bit of respite time. When your child wakes up about every 45 minutes through the night and getting plenty of nourishment, this should not be happening..actually, it does all the time, but if you call CPS for help, you will have your child put into a Foster Home or, after several Foster Homes have found the child too hard to handle and turned him back, the child is adopted out without your help and all you asked is for a few hours of respite every week. Families are the closest line of defense. Parents usually have to work and babysitters for an autistic child who is getting to be 3-5 are getting to be too much of a problem for them, what do you do? Quit your job and stay home and raise the child? A College Professor did that to allow his wife to teach. I did that because it was difficult to train babysitters and too many quit before they became accustomed to my son. The best way to handle hyperactivity and behavioral problems with any child is to put him on a restricted diet which means giving him no cereals out of boxes, nothing from cans,no koolaid or anything with artificial color, sugar, aspartame or anything similar, and nothing you cannot instantly know to be safe. Bernie Rimland wrote some, In WA State, they worked very well in a Group Home for autistic and emotionally disturbed children what is what they called them years ago. You probably advise a number of people on "what works" "what you do if your child is taken from your home" and so on. I hope I have told you something new. I am still, after my oldest child turned 40, still learning..Better diagnoses and second opinions are always needed . Some children hear with a millisecond of delay so you have to talk to them with a different cadence; some are slightly deaf; many don't want to be touched and don't want to eat anything other than certain foods. There are lots of ways to handle those things..I wish you luck because you are gleaning a great deal of information to go through...
