Rent vouchers much cheaper than foster care, living on street

There was a buzz of excitement in the air at the Thurston County Housing Authority last week with word that the authority has received a major grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to keep families united under one roof.

The $313,872 grant will be used to fund 50 rental vouchers here in South Sound for qualified families and individuals, including:
• Families whose inadequate living condition is the primary cause for their separation or near separation from their children.
• Young adults who are aging out of the foster care system and could end up homeless without the rental support.
Here in South Sound and across the country, thousands of children live in foster care or are at risk of being placed in foster care – not because of physical or mental abuse, but because their parents cannot a afford a home.
