Tusla Statement - Foster Care                                                                                                        In light of recent media coverage into the care arrangements of a child who had been living with their grandparents Tusla wishes to reassure the public that our main concern is always to ensure that each child is living with a carer who is best suited to meet their needs. Furthermore, Tusla values the important role of the extended family, in particular grandparents, in providing care and protection for a child where their parents are unable to do so.

A study into Manitoba youth connected to child welfare shows that almost three-quarters of young suicide victims are addicted to drugs or alcohol.

A report from the Office of the Children’s Advocate (OCA) analyzed the histories of 50 youth who died by suicide in Manitoba from 2009 to 2013, compared with a control group of 100 other youths. All youths in the study had some contact with the child welfare system.
