Dartmouth study offers hope for babies exposed to drugs in womb | New Hampshire:
LEBANON — One in 10 babies born at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center last year had been exposed to drugs in their mothers’ wombs.
These are the littlest victims of the state’s opioid addiction crisis.
Their mothers depend on maintenance medications, such as buprenorphine, during pregnancy to prevent withdrawal symptoms that can be dangerous to a fetus.

Child Welfare & Opioid Addiction, Part 1: Striking a Balance of Protection, Treatment
Child Welfare & Opioid Addiction, Part 1: Striking a Balance of Protection, Treatment - Manchester Ink LinkManchester Ink Link:
CONCORD, NH – Dr. Anne Johnston, a neonatologist, remembers a time when she had a lot more conflict with child protection workers. When social services received a report that a pregnant woman was an opioid addict, or that a baby had been born with opioid withdrawal symptoms, a state investigator would come to the hospital and start asking the woman pointed questions. “I would think, ‘Why are you doing this? This mother seems very nice,’” Johnston recalls.

Mad Angel: Former Foster Child Now Parent is Creating an Army of Victims to Fight CPS:
May is National Foster Care Month, and as many of our readers know, foster care is often not in the “best interests” of children. Too often, children are ripped from loving homes over false allegations or absurd reasons and placed in homes with strangers. Health Impact News has reported numerous stories of children who are placed into foster care who never should have been removed from their families. The system they are placed within often fails to protect those children, and instead often causes great harm, as former foster child Angelia Borths explains.
Angelia Borths had her children seized by Child Protective Services and placed into foster care once simply because her 6 year old daughter was “too short.” Though the headline looked like it could have been ripped from a satire or spoof website, it was all too real.
Fortunately, Angelia, or “Mad Angel” as she is known to thousands of her followers online, was able to regain custody of her children after the case with the absurd allegations was dropped.

12,000 Children from Foster Care Sue State of Texas over Abuses:
Crystal Bentley, 23, entered the Texas foster care system when she was 2 and wouldn’t leave it until she aged out at 18.
In the intervening years, as she was shuffled from place to place, she was repeatedly beaten and sexually abused — sometimes by the adults entrusted with her care, sometimes by their biological children, sometimes by other foster kids or her own relatives, Bentley testified in federal court Wednesday.
