There can be few more heart-rending images than that of a new baby being wrenched from its mother’s arms

There was much excitement last week over an academic study showing a huge increase in the number of newborn babies being seized by social workers, up since 2008 by more than 150 per cent. The tabloid press piled in to report on one mother who has had 16 babies removed from her in turn.

In fact, what did not seem to concern either the academics or anyone else discussing this study was the possibility that too many such babies are being seized without proper justification.
