A former Child-Protective Specialist at the Administration for Children’s Services was convicted last week of fabricating a visit to the home of a troubled child, according to the Department of Investigation. Police arrested Mimi Allen Sept. 8 for logging the fictitious check-in the same July 2013 day the mother of the child was in the hospital giving birth.

Luis Santiago, a certified public interest appeal that will address the question of whether trial courts possess the authority under state statutes to deny applications for family violence restraining orders without holding a hearing. The case will be argued by Attorney Linda Allard of Greater Hartford Legal Aid (GHLA).

For many grandparents, the joys of grandparenthood center around getting to love a new child, play with them, give them treats, and take pride in their accomplishments without the responsibility of taking them home at night, putting them down to bed, enduring their tantrums and misbehavior, and being the voice of discipline in their lives. Yet, thousands of grandparents in Minnesota and Wisconsin are both grandparent and parent; they are raising or temporarily caring for their grandchildren because the children's parents cannot. It is a labor of love that is full of challenges. A local citizen group hopes to celebrate those grandparents and connect them with help.
