Study: ADHD Symptoms Persist Despite Medication in 9 Out of 10 Kids
Study: ADHD Symptoms Persist Despite Medication in 9 Out of 10 Kids - Lindsay Abrams - The Atlantic:
The current debate over ADHD medication focuses on whether the benefits -- improved concentration, better behavior, better performance in school -- outweigh the potential risks of medicating young children. Complicating all the abuse potential of ADHD drugs, with students using them off-label to get ahead in school and incidences of addiction, sometimes borne to tragic ends.
In the youngest children diagnosed with ADHD, parents may choose to eschew medication altogether in favor ofalternative methods like changes in diet, exercise, and behavior modification programs. But a new study out of Johns Hopkins suggests that the "benefits" used to rationalize medication might not even exist. Or at least, don't have lasting impact.

Foster care allegations troubling
Other view: Foster care allegations troubling | Stevens Point Journal | stevenspointjournal.com:
Few things are more discouraging or disconcerting than when people entrusted to take care of our most vulnerable citizens — in this case, foster children — are accused of systematic wrongdoing and blatant abuse of their caretaking role.
The recent accusations from the state Department of Children and Families against Community Care Resources, a foster care placement service based in Middleton, are nothing short of startling, and give us pause for a number of reasons.

To Avoid Broken Adoptions, Avoid Breaking Families
To Avoid Broken Adoptions, Avoid Breaking Families - City Conversations - CityLimits.org:
No one's sure how often adopted children end up back in foster care. What is certain is that blood relationships are often too deep or complex for court action to sever them.
No one's sure how often adopted children end up back in foster care. What is certain is that blood relationships are often too deep or complex for court action to sever them.
Failed adoption is an unsettling reality that is too often hidden from the public eye. Adoption can be a wonderful thing for the right child at the right time. There are many adoptive parents who are heroic and inspiring. However, since the federal Adoption and Safe Families Act of 1997, adoption has too often been as presented as—if not a panacea—then at least the preferred permanency option, by public child welfare authorities.
The term "permanency" is used inaccurately, sometimes almost cynically. In the context of public child welfare, the term can be closer in meaning to "permanently out of oursystem," no longer an expense, a risk, or a liability.

State of the Union 2013: Response of The Revolutionary Party.
My Fellow Americans: The State of our Union is as bad as it has ever been.
President Obama claimed tonight that the State of the Union is Stronger. In all due respect, his speech was a travesty. The President is either completely out of touch with reality, or he is simply another corrupt politician playing the little game all of our elected officials play in Washington, DC.
My name is Bill Windsor. I am a 64-year-old husband of 41 years, father of two, and grandfather. I was born in America. I served in the United States Army Reserve for six years during the Viet Nam War. I am neither a Democrat nor a Republican. I have never protested anything before. I have never been arrested or charged with any crime. I haven't even had a parking ticket or speeding ticket in more than a decade. I have owned and operated many companies during my career, and I have been President or CEO of large companies. Among other things, I am a documentary film producer and director. I set out to film a documentary about government and judicial corruption called "Lawless America." The movie became a mission, a movement, and finally a revolution -- the Lawless America Revolution.
I am speaking to you tonight as the representative of The Revolutionary Party. The Revolutionary Party is a new party that has been created to save America. I happen to believe it is our only hope.
If the President doesn't realize that our country has never been in a worse state, he should be impeached for incompetence. Since he surely knows, does nothing about it, and covers it up, he should be impeached for treason.
The sorry state of our union is not due to President Obama. Please do not misinterpret my words; I am not picking on President Obama. The situation would be the same if Mitt Romney had been elected. President Obama is just the current president in a long line that goes back to at least Nixon who have allowed our country to become as corrupt as a country can get.
The State of the Union might be summed up in one word: CORRUPT.

Editor's note: America has a long history of treating the poor like criminals, from legislation banning the transportation of poor people across state lines to anti-vagrancy laws that could land you in jail if you didn't have a job or a home. We've come to rely on the criminal justice system to deal with the poor, even as more and more Americans fall into poverty. The following article is part of a series that looks at the diverse ways our countrycriminalizespoverty, including laws targeting the homeless, the surveillance of welfare recipients, the re-emergence of debtor prisons, and extreme policing tactics like stop-and-frisk.
Child Services
On February 7, the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled that a positive drug test does not prove parental neglect and that the state’s child protection services do not have jurisdiction over pregnant women. “The court’s decision protects the rights of all pregnant women and in so doing actually protects maternal, fetal, and child health,” Lynn Paltrow said.
