The foster father accused of beating a 5-month-old baby girl to death in December while she was in his care was in Mendocino County Superior Court Friday to schedule a future appearance.
Wilson L. Tubbs III, 38, faces a charge of child abuse resulting in death, which carries the same weight as murder, according to the Mendocino County District Attorney's Office.

Kern County's Child Protective Services department has cost county taxpayers another $1.4 million. That's the settlement amount granted last month to a local doctor in a case where CPS illegally took her two children. The county did this in February, 2011, without a warrant and, as it turns out, for no legitimate reason.

Lawmakers for years have dabbled with the notion of lifting the confidentiality of Kentucky’s juvenile and family courts. It’s time for them to put an end to the secrecy that protects the system and adults who run it but does very little — if anything — to protect the youths and families caught up in it.
