The current drug-offender system is not sufficient to stop addiction. Many good people who suffer from a deadly disease belong in treatment, not in jail. Many of us want to mandate drug treatment for nonviolent offenders instead of locking them up into a life-long cycle of drug addiction and crime.

Different legal institutions, agencies and professionals need to come up with a range of solutions for addressing issues caused by increasing numbers of people who are representing themselves in the family justice system, according to a new study co-authored by Queen’s University law professor Nick Bala.

LANSING, MI - Biological fathers could have paternity rights if the mother was married to someone else at the time of the birth under legislation signed Tuesday by Gov. Rick Snyder.
Another new law he signed changes how children are removed from the custody of their parents - a response to fallout from a 2008 case in which a 7-year-old boy was placed into protective care after his dad accidentally gave him a Mike's Hard Lemonade at a Detroit Tigers game.

A Boys Town child psychiatrist told attorneys and child advocates Thursday they should challenge the use of psychotropic medications for children -- especially powerful antipsychotic drugs -- and look more often to behavioral and other therapies to treat mental health problems in children.
