| Infant withdrawal or Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) can occur when an infant has been exposed to opiates (including heroin, methadone and buprenorphine), stimulants, sedatives, alcohol and some antidepressants during pregnancy. It is not possible to reliably predict, before birth, which babies may develop NAS. The incidence of NAS is not directly related to the type or amount of substance used. The current drug-offender system is not sufficient to stop addiction. Many good people who suffer from a deadly disease belong in treatment, not in jail. Many of us want to mandate drug treatment for nonviolent offenders instead of locking them up into a life-long cycle of drug addiction and crime.

LANSING, MI - Biological fathers could have paternity rights if the mother was married to someone else at the time of the birth under legislation signed Tuesday by Gov. Rick Snyder.
Another new law he signed changes how children are removed from the custody of their parents - a response to fallout from a 2008 case in which a 7-year-old boy was placed into protective care after his dad accidentally gave him a Mike's Hard Lemonade at a Detroit Tigers game.
