THE Legislature is considering a bill that would require officials to factor in children's religion when deciding where to place them for foster care and adoption.
Backers believe such a law would make it easier for children to adjust to their new homes and would help to tamp down the trauma of being removed from their birth families.
Critics say the legislation would severely cut down on the number of possible foster and adoptive families. It also could be used by birth parents to object to their children living with same-sex couples or gay, bisexual and transgender single parents.
